Joanna MacGregor and Andy Sheppard / Joanna MacGregor: Deep River
The much-acclaimed Deep River is an album inspired by Joanna MacGregor’s interest in the music of the American Deep South.
The eleven tracks on Deep River carry the listener through a wealth of repertoire; from the much covered traditional ‘Sometimes I feel like a Motherless Child’, through the Delta blues of William and Versey Smith, to original interpretations of songs by Tom Waits, Bob Dylan, Nick Cave and Johnny Cash.
Deep River is the first duo recording by Joanna and Andy Sheppard, reflecting that innate sense of partnership that years of live performance bring. A range of post-recording treatments serve to create new colours and textures, adding electronica and multi-tracking into the mix.
As overall producer, Joanna MacGregor brings to the album the diverse influences of four different collaborative producers; Seb Rochford (drummer and bandleader of Mercury-nominated Polar Bear), Matt Fairclough (sound artist and composer), Will Gregory (Goldfrapp) and Andy Sheppard himself.
